The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Director, Faculty Programs & Services, the Assistant Director supports the pedagogical development of faculty and other instructors at Columbia, through programs, services, and resources to advance teaching and learning at Columbia. The incumbent will establish working relationships with these populations through the design and implementation of new faculty orientations, institutes, workshops, and other programming informed by the scholarship of teaching and learning. The incumbent will conduct consultations and classroom observation services as well as a provide assistance in the areas of course design, instructional design and delivery customized to subject area domains of faculty teaching at Columbia.

Responsibilities

Collaboratively designs, implements, and assesses programming for faculty (such as orientations, institutes, workshops, seminars, communities of practice, and other offerings) that meet teaching and learning needs and challenges. Engages participants in reflection on and conversations about teaching and learning principles and practices informed by the scholarship of teaching and learning, educational development, and cognitive psychology. Supports curricula tailored to the needs of faculty, departments, schools or programs, whether delivered in-person (through programs), a hybrid or online format (e.g. seminars, self-paced courses).
Designs and disseminates pedagogical resources. Writes teaching guides and collaborates on the development of multimedia materials both for the entire Columbia instructional community and customized for particular schools, departments, or programs, to be featured on the CTL website, and programs, and services.
Consults with faculty on a range of pedagogical and professional topics (such as course design, assessment of learning, inclusive teaching, active learning, leveraging Artificial Intelligence for teaching and learning, collaborative learning, mentoring, etc.) and projects, engaging them in critical reflection on their teaching and their students’ learning. Conducts formative faculty teaching observations. Consults with schools, departments, or programs, on curriculum design, pedagogies, and addressing other teaching and learning needs. Cultivates partnerships on campus to identify new needs and opportunities for teaching support.
Contributes to the work of the Faculty Programs and Services team and the CTL including internally (such as processes, staff professional development, ongoing assessment, priority initiatives, and collaborations) and externally (through outreach and representing the CTL in on-campus and off-campus venues).
Engages with teaching and learning and educational development literature; considers trends, and experiments with innovations as applied to classroom, online, and hybrid learning environments.
- Identifies and integrates evidence-based practices and resources available beyond Columbia into the work of the CTL.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's and/or Advanced degree in an academic discipline required and three years' experience in designing, facilitating, and evaluating faculty development programs or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Prior university teaching experience and well-developed teaching, research, and assessment skills.
Knowledge of evidence-based practices in the literature on teaching and learning in higher education.
Strong communication, facilitation, presentation, writing, collaboration, and consultation skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively with administrators, academic units, faculty, staff, and other partners and key stakeholders.
Commitment to diversity in the academic environment.

Preferred Qualifications

PhD in an academic discipline is strongly preferred.
Experience in a teaching center.
