Job Summary  | The Associate Vice President for Research and Innovation (AVPRI) will work closely with the team in the Vice President for Research and Innovation (VPRI) office to expand programs in basic and applied research in areas such as, but not limited to engineering, physical sciences and social science. The AVPRI will work with faculty, staff, funding agencies, corporate partners, and other universities and labs to advance new research and innovation opportunities, especially those that are interdisciplinary in nature. To help accelerate the expansion of research at UTA, we are seeking an experienced research leader and administrator for the position of Associate Vice President for Research (AVPRI).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities  | Facilitate building and diversifying UTA’s funded research portfolio, in the physical sciences, engineering and social sciences in accordance with the University’s strategic research themes. Convene faculty, department chairs, associate deans for research, deans, center directors and other stakeholders in the relevant colleges to achieve this goal. Oversee functioning and growth of UTA’s Proposal Development Center, to include facilitating visits for faculty to funding agencies in Washington DC and elsewhere as appropriate. Support government relations at the state and federal level as they impact the responsibilities of the division. Collaborate with other members of the VPRI team to jointly advance the strategic priorities of the division. Performs other duties assigned.
Minimum Qualifications  | A PhD in a physical science, engineering or social science with an exceptional reputation as a researcher and student mentor or an equivalent mix of education and relevant experience in similar role. A broad understanding of academic research funding opportunities, proposal development, and grant management. A successful record of accomplishment in developing and managing interdisciplinary teams and interinstitutional collaborations. Experience with academic administration. Supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications  | Direct experience with DOD, DOE, NSF, USDOT, USDOE, and/or similar funding agencies An expertise or deep interest in using data to inform advancement of the institution’s research strengths; Familiarity with UTA’s status as an HSI and AANAPISI institution and how to leverage that status in seeking extramural funding. Knowledge of the academic research enterprise including regulatory compliance, contracting, sponsored programs, technology transfer, and other research administration functions.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities  | The candidate must possess strong leadership and interpersonal skills; be capable of building consensus; be knowledgeable of and sensitive to the talents, interests, and scholarship needs of faculty and academic administrators from a range disciplines and academic units; and foster vigorous programs of research across the breadth of the university. The candidate will have knowledge of and experience with governmental, industrial, and private funding sources and mechanisms. The candidate will have strong writing and public speaking skills.
