Overview of Instructional Design Consultant
Reporting to the Director of the Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) and working with other members of the CFE Staff, the Instructional Design Consultant will support faculty in developing learner-centered, accessible courses and instructional materials, emphasizing Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and accessibility standards. This role involves designing, developing, and facilitating faculty learning opportunities, including a course design institute, and providing one-on-one support to faculty to create well-designed, accessible courses that implement evidence-based practices. Budgeted salary range: $60,000 - $65,000

Duties and Responsibilities of Instructional Design Consultant
- Design, develop, and facilitate workshops, learning opportunities, and a course design institute focused on creating learner-centered, engaging, and accessible courses grounded in evidence-based practices and utilizing available technology tools, including Artificial Intelligence, as appropriate.
- Provide one-on-one consultations and departmental support to assist faculty in developing accessible instructional materials and courses (including course templates), ensuring alignment with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and accessibility standards. Assist faculty in utilizing appropriate technologies to address learning accommodations.
- Develop and maintain up-to-date documentation and resources related to evidence-based teaching practices, course design, accessibility, and student engagement to support faculty in their instructional efforts.
- Conduct needs assessments to identify faculty development needs related to teaching, particularly in the creation of accessible instructional materials, and use this data to inform the development of faculty learning opportunities and resources. Assist with the evaluation of faculty development programming.
- Maintain relationships with and serve as a representative on campus- and system-level units/committees related to teaching and accessibility, ensuring alignment and collaboration across the institution.

Education of Instructional Design Consultant
- Master's degree in Instructional Design, Instructional/Educational Technology, Education, or related field.
Experience of Instructional Design Consultant
- Minimum of three years of instructional design experience working with faculty/instructors/subject matter experts to design, develop and support delivery of instruction.
- Experience with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and accessibility standards.
- Experience in higher education and designing/facilitating faculty development programs is preferred.
Core Competencies of Instructional Design Consultant
Required:
- Knowledge of course design, evidence-based instructional practices, and student engagement strategies.
- Expertise in Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and accessibility standards (including WCAG 2.1 AA).
- Proficiency with instructional technology tools, including at least one Learning Management System (LMS).
- Familiarity with integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the instructional design process, as well as into courses and curricula.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver engaging instruction to small groups (workshops/training sessions) and consult effectively one-on-one.
- Experience with program evaluation and conducting needs assessments.
- Strong communication (written and oral) and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a team, and manage competing project outcomes and deadlines.
- Excellent organization and problem-solving skills.
Preferred:
- Higher education teaching experience.
- Experience working with Brightspace (D2L) Learning Management System.
- Familiarity with assistive technologies used to support student learning.
