Learning Department Specialist - Secondary Social Studies Full Description

Working from one of our Family Service Centers located in Pennsylvania, the Learning Department Specialist will serve a dual role, working as a liaison between both the Instructional Designers and Teachers. First, the Learning Department Specialist will support and coach the instructional design team in utilizing evidence-based instructional practices within asynchronous course creation. Second, the Learning Department Specialist will work with teachers and receive thier feedback regarding the curriculum. Learning Department Specialists support the design of online courses, establish effective communication and relationships with all stakeholders, develop expert knowledge and practice of online teaching and course design, and perform other administrative duties as assigned as part of this role. Second, the learning specialist will stay present and current in instructional design by carrying a reduced (50%) instructional design focus in ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies, Art/Music/PE (Specials), World Language, or Electives.

Essential Duties

Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership in online curriculum design and delivery.
  • Understand and apply effective teaching and engagement strategies in online courses
  • Spend approximately 50% of the week on curriculum design; projects and assignments to be identified by Learning Department administrative team
  • Research, evaluate and recommend curriculum resources and technology for adoption into courses
  • Gather and review course outcomes and data to plan course, lesson, and assessment creation as well as revisions and enhancements
  • Collaborating with K-12 specialists to review instructional practices, course data and implement changes and updates to course content
  • Facilitate focus groups
  • Mentor and coach instructional designers
  • Create and provide content specific professional learning for instructional designers and/or classroom teachers
  • Manage and support systems for course revisions and enhancements
  • Keep abreast of new developments and research in online education and share this information with teachers as appropriate

Though Learning Department Specialists work across content areas, specialists will specialize in ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies, Art/ Music/ PE, World Language, and/or K-12 electives and have a record of accomplishment of success in one or more of these

Work Environment

Physical Demands
This is largely a sedentary role. Requires the ability to lift, squat, sit, bend or stand as necessary. Ability to travel to other sites/locations as needed.

Required Education and Experience
