WHAT IS THE POSITION
The Learning Engineer will contribute to the process of applying learning sciences to Edmentum’s learning platforms with human-centered engineering design methods and data-informed decision making to support learners and their development. The Learning Engineer is responsible for managing, extracting, cleaning, preparing, and analyzing high volume, variety, and velocity data from multiple Edmentum data stores/data lake and will use modern infrastructure and analytic tooling to do so, adhering to best practices in data quality and privacy. Additionally, the Learning Engineer will support the execution of Edmentum’s research agenda through the development and maintenance of robust data pipelines, interactive dashboards, and data modeling tools that enable advanced analytics on large-scale distributed data stores. The Learning Engineer will be comfortable maintaining research data and analytic toolkits for research team members.
The Learning Engineer will bring experience with data engineering and data and analytic infrastructure suited to fulfill the needs of scientific educational research. In addition, the Learning Engineer may be familiar with learning science, efficacy, and psychometric research and modeling methods, to support communication and collaboration with Edmentum’s research scientists.
This position will entail close collaboration with colleagues in Learning, Content and Assessment Design, Psychometrics, Efficacy Research, Edmentum Technology data architecture, engineering and security teams to execute upon Edmentum’s mission of creating successful student outcomes everywhere learning occurs.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
• Extract, parse, analyze, investigate, interpret, and extract knowledge from high volume, velocity, and variety of data obtained from online and blended instructional applications and associated outcome measures.
• Perform advanced queries on relational and non-relational operational databases using SQL and other query tools as needed.
• Create and maintain analytic tools for the automaticity of analyses.
• Establish data extraction methods in support of research and psychometric analyses and in collaboration with Edmentum Technology teams.
• Provide support and collaborative contributions for research and psychometric activities using appropriate statistical analysis and contributing to technical documentation by way of quality assurance and output.
• Manage timelines and data expectations for research studies and analyses, including coordination of data requests and extractions across internal stakeholders and schools/districts, and data agreements and exchange approaches that adhere to privacy standards and expectations of integrity.
WHAT EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED
• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Educational Research, or related field.
• At least five years of experience in the use of scientific statistical software including Python, PySpark, and R (R Studio).
• At least 2 years’ experience with cloud infrastructure such as AWS.
• At least 2 years’ experience with relational databases such as SQL, Postgres, Aurora, or RDS.
• At least 2 years’ experience with non-relational data stores such as AWS DynamoDB.
• At least 1 year experience with Databricks Delta Lake.
• Work history showing a proven capacity in designing and developing data pipelines for scientific use, within established timelines and costs.
• Experience extracting data from educational technology products to shape new and existing approaches in learning engineering, efficacy research, and psychometric research.
• Knowledge of research methods and statistics at a level suited to translate requirements provided by research scientists into data structures and in some cases conduct scientific research under the supervision of a senior research scientist.
• Experience in advanced analytics and associated data requirements preferred.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience extracting, transforming, and loading data for the purposes of scientific research and analytics from relational and non-relational data stores.
• Experience translating requirements between educational research and engineering team members.
• Experience prioritizing work from among competing requests and needs in collaboration with key stakeholders.
• Experience using advanced statistical computing software.
• Familiarity with educational technology.
• Familiarity with current trends in education.

Pay range for this role:
$95,000—$125,000 USD
