We are seeking an experienced Production Editor to project manage delivery of our products on time and on budget.

Purpose

The Production Editor is responsible for managing new print, digital, and A/V product and associated supplements from unedited content through to release for distribution/sale and archiving, on time and on budget, with appropriate quality levels. Target is to handle 2 or 3 products and associated supplements per month plus any post-publication items or items resulting from related initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities

Project Evaluation:

  • Assess content for copyediting and design needs; select sample chapters for testing copyeditor and design performance; create a copyediting style sheet.
  • Determine the best production method based on project needs and potential challenges with current editing tools/Content Management System.
  • Ensure the design aligns with content level, audience, highlights unique features, and meets page count requirements.

Project Scheduling/Budgeting:

  • Develop a detailed schedule addressing concerns from project evaluation and author availability.
  • Align schedules with design and copyediting needs, managing vendors as required.
  • Collaborate with vendors and freelancers to anticipate and resolve delays; report inadequate vendor performance promptly.
  • Manage per-project budget and understand relative production costs.

Quality Assurance:

  • Review copyediting quality and presentation accuracy in Content Management System, editing tools, or PDFs; ensure materials meet Springer Publishing’s standards.
  • Evaluate author corrections for atypical changes or high costs and consult with management if necessary.
  • Assign appropriate freelance support to maintain high-quality products; ensure accuracy of front matters, tables of contents, covers, and supplementary materials.
  • Ensure supplements are of appropriate quality, aligned with company standards, tied to the book's editing, and available one month before textbook publication.

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Participate in project launch, department, and one-on-one meetings; contribute to department initiatives.
  • Maintain effective communication with managers and other departments; ensure excellent author experience through content, schedule, and process support.
  • Keep the production status report updated in real-time for the main product and supplements.
  • Support department- and company-wide consistency and quality in content, working with the department chairperson as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in English or a related field.
  • Strong grammar, language, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in copyediting and familiarity with APA (American Psychological Association), AMA (American Medical Association), and Chicago citation styles.
  • Experience with rights and permissions processes.
  • Knowledge of composition and basic production technologies, including audio and video editing.
  • Ability to work independently while keeping department managers informed of project status, quality, and cost.
  • Hands-on experience with content management systems is highly desirable.
  • Highly detail-oriented and organized, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Minimum of five years of experience as a textbook and supplements production editor.
