Department Summary
The UNT Controller leads financial management and accounting activities that provide high quality, efficient, effective, and accurate financial services to all UNT Denton campus constituents. This team provides timely and accurate financial reporting that will withstand audits and provide reliable and meaningful information to both internal and external stakeholders. Controller operations include campus accounting and financial reporting (excluding budget and decision support), financial statement external audit management, and capital asset accounting.
Position Overview
The Controller's Office at the University of North Texas is seeking to hire a Senior Accountant - Capital Assets to join our team. This position will primarily handle capital assets accounting, related assets management areas and ensuring accuracy and compliance. Work involves maintaining, preparing, posting, and balancing accounting and financial statements, records, documents, or reports. Heavy data driven position and with time sensitive deadlines. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or other related field and three years' of general accounting or related experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education and training.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and procedures affecting the maintenance of accounting records and automated accounting systems.
* Ability to interpret and apply accounting theory; to work accurately with numerical detail; to analyze, consolidate, and interpret accounting data; and to communicate effectively.
* Experience working in one or more functional areas of accounting.
* Strong working knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, and accounting practices.
* Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
* Ability to analyze, consolidate, and present accounting data in clear concise form.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience in capital assets accounting, state accounting (USAS, Lease Query), higher education accounting and in PeopleSoft application is preferred.
Required License/Registration/Certifications
Job Duties:
Prepares financial statements, reports, schedules, and exhibits; prepares and/or processes general journal entries; and prepares and/or processes payment, cash, purchase, travel, and related vouchers.
Prepares account reconciliations on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis as needed; researches and reconciles discrepancies in accounts, bank statements, or appropriation balances and reports findings.
Prepares periodic analyses of fund balances and expenditures, and prepares technical reports on payroll, estimates, cost data, and budget items. Audits accounting and financial documents for accuracy and compliance with departmental policies and procedures and state and federal statutes. Classifies, codes, posts, and balances financial and accounting documents and records.
Researches and reconciles discrepancies in accounts, bank statements, or appropriation balances, and reports findings.
Reviews agency accounting records, such as expenditure, fund, appropriation, expense and revenue collection records, and ensures agency assets are accounted for properly. Maintains adequate records of expenditures, funds, appropriations, and expenses, as well as revenue collected and deposited. Maintains systems and controls necessary to provide accurate accounts of expenditures and account balances. May recommend improvements, adaptations, or revisions to the accounting system and develop and/or update accompanying procedures.
Approve expenditures, process cost transfer journals and review new awards for budget restrictions. Prepare invoices in PeopleSoft, cash draws and/or reports in accordance with sponsor guidelines. Accurately prepare and submit a variety of interim and final financial reports as required by external sponsor or auditors. Generate, review, distribute and collect labor reports in accordance with relevant policies, reconciles labor costs to general ledger and makes coding corrections as appropriate. Assists with audits; both internal and external. Assist in creating, monitoring and updating financial related policies and procedures.Answer inquiries, counsels relevant individuals, Principal Investigator (PI) and administrative staff on budget change needs, allowable and allocable charges, documentation requirements, policies and procedures. Resolves simple issues independently and refers more complex issues to higher levels. Remains current on issues in field of research administration to serve as a subject matter expert in order to mitigate risk.Initiate and participate in data cleanup projects.
