Job Summary | Located in Salt Lake City, the University of Utah is a public, 4-year institution committed to providing an exceptional academic and co-curricular experience for students and the University community. This position reports to the Assistant Director of Budget & Finance.
Responsibilities | This position is one of two Senior Accountant positions under the direction of an Assistant Director. Each senior accountant will have points of specialization within the described duties and will be cross trained to support all functions.
Accounts Receivable
Manage day-to-day Accounts Receivable operations. Audit student housing charges Keep up-to-date on StarRez dashboards Development of new reports Maintenance of current reports Audit application, reservation, and other fees Audit waivers Program rates in StarRez for all charge types.Manage items types with Income AccountingAudit contract dates Prepare and bill student accounts for each academic session. Work in coordination with other campus departments or independent groups (such as Athletics, Utah Global) Work closely with other campus departments regarding student account charges and changes. Participate on HRE Contract Appeals Committee. Reconcile Accounts Receivable accounts to verify accuracy between HRE and university financial reports. Management Report Reconciliations Credit Card Reconciliations Credit Card Web Reconciliations Process refunds as needed Bursar’s Office Reconciliations Reconcile Balance Sheet accounts Monthly reconciliation of Dining cost of goods Preparation of journal entries. Prepare financial reports related to accounts receivables. Annual weighted averages Census reports Manage student meal plan accounts, responsibilities include: adding, changing, removing, flex dollar adjustments, and reconciliation of meal plan usage/charges with Dining Services Following reconciliation, prep Dining Services invoices for payment. Prepare monthly COGS journal entries. Process invoicing and payments related to third party groups and school clubs renting conference spaces in many Housing & Residential Education buildings.Process deposits within the University’s timelineProcess invoicing and payments for independent groups during summer sessions. In coordination with HRE Facilities, reconcile and monitor payments and receivables for R&R projects. Resolve conflicts concerning student accounts (both current and prior); work with front desk staff to resolve issues.Resolve and distribute write-off recoveriesInput scholarship information (including set up) Input of monthly period closing reports. a. Deferrals and reversals b. Credit card fees Other closing items as needed Assist HRE staff with accounts receivables questions or concerns. Manage Accounting email inbox. Prepare deposits as needed. Minimum Qualifications | Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience), plus two years professional accounting experience. Also required are a thorough knowledge of established accounting principles and practices, knowledge of accounting software, advanced spreadsheet skills, the ability to write queries and macros and demonstrated analytical, problem solving, human relations and effective communication skills.
Ability to understand, and apply University departmental regulations in workplace. 3. Ability to work effectively in a diverse environment..
Excellent organizational skills.
Ability to accurately analyze information, situations, and procedures.
Experience in writing business correspondence and operating procedures.
Ability to work collaboratively with students, parents, university officials, and vendors in diverse university setting.
Working knowledge of various software packages (including Excel spreadsheets, word processing and e-mail).
Ability to work a modified schedule as needed.
Certifications as a Certified Public Accountant may be preferred for certain positions.
Preferences | Experience working with StarRez and/or PeopleSoft software. Experience working within a college / university setting. Experience working with Atrium or other meal plan databases such as CS Gold or Blackboard.
